Im not sure if Sonata have ever played on Sunset Strip..all I know is they rock and they are coming to town.

5.Blue Oyster Cult – Godzilla
One of the better songs by the band immortalized on SNL

6.Black Sabbath – Neon Nights
I can never really consider Sabbath without Ozzy Sabbath but the first few albums they put out without him were pretty kick ass...not Sabbath per say but still fucking great.

7.Winger – Seventeen
I dont know anything about Winger but this song just fit

8.Ratt – Lovin’ You is a Dirty Job
Im assuming loving anyone in Ratt was pretty dirty too

9.AC DC – Night Prowler
best song ever to inspire a serial killer...too soon?

10.Motley Crue – Too Young To Fall In Love
It has taken me awhile to start listening to the crue again, seeing as they somehow got super popular all over again once "The Dirt" came out. I have a love hate relationship with these guys.

11.Skid Row – Youth Gone Wild
Sebastian Bach once got pretty angry about being lumped in with Poison...why he thought Skid Row was any different we will never know! ps. Poison is on this mix...you think he is going to be pissed about that?

12.Alice Cooper – Poison
Im not the biggest Alice Cooper fan but he does have the only radio show i actually get excited about. If you ever get a chance check it out, he often plays some really cool stuff that you would never expect to hear on the radio.

13.Kiss – Under the Gun
As a Kiss fan, it sometimes shocks me at how much I love the first few albums they did without make up. This genre was made for Paul Stanley

14.Def Leppard – High and Dry
I never knew Def Leppard was this good, seriously at what point did they start sucking?

15Great White – Once Bitten, Twice Shy
Is it wrong that I have to ask who were these people that actually went and saw them? It is isn't it?

16.Cinderella – Nobody’s Fool
Much like Winger I know little of Cinderella, but I do sort of recall liking this song as a kid

17.The Runaways – Cherry Bomb
Joan Jett and Lita Ford...

18.Accept – Fast as a Shark
I recently was given a best of Accept disk and was happy to see that Balls to the Wall was really just a crappy song by a good band

19.Iron Maiden – Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter
Maiden doesnt really suit most of this genre but ?

20.Judas Priest – Turbo Lover

How anyone was shocked that these guys were fronted by a gay man is beyond me? Did they not see this video?

Winter to me is three things:

1.) At times depressing and dark...the days are short....the nights long and you can't help but get down when that cold wind hits your skin. It's dark when you leave for work and when you come home from work or school I suppose. Winter, in general has this way of somehow making you feel lonely even if you are surrounded by people.

2.) Oddly enough winter also has this sense of peacefulness that is only really matched by a sunset or sunrise. That first snowfall...where you can see the snowflakes glisten as they fall in the night sky and onto snow covered streets and pass the ice covered trees. Really, it is one of the most amazing sights. (Too bad its often way to cold to apreciate outside of your warm home)

3.) Winter despite all this can be one of the best seasons for one Christmas is seriously my favorite holiday(yes laugh)...plus for any Canadian and I suspect some Americans....winter means HOCKEY. Whether it is going to a game, playing on a frozen rink, or watching hockey night in Canada on a cold saturday night....winter and hockey are synomous.

David's "Guilty" Pleasures Mix

As you might be able to tell from my quotation marks around "Guilty", I'm not such a huge fan of the term Guilty Pleasures. As Chuck Klosterman wrote, "In and of itself, the term 'guilty pleasure' seems like a reasonable way to describe certain activities... Drinking more than five glasses of gin before (or during) work generally qualifies as a guilty pleasure.. Labelling things like Patrick Swayze movies a guilty pleasure implies that a) people should feel bad for liking things they sincerley enjoy, and b)if these same people were not somehow coerced into watching Road House every time it's on TBS, they'd probably be reading A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man." Given that, here are my 'guilty' pleasures of 'modern' rock, which is to say I like these songs, and I'm not entirely concerned whether you think I should feel bad about it! FTW.

Guilty Pleasures: A Defense -- Sharmeen

1. La Gasolina - Daddy Yankee
While repetitive and often sexist (but hey, they sing in a different
language, so I can't tell!) I always dance to reggatone when i get
ready.

2. Getting Jiggy With it - Will Smith
Will Smith is sooooo funny. Come on! Jiggy? Amazing.

3. Don't Stop - Michael Franti and Spearhead
I broke up with Spearhead a few years ago, so this is a bit of an old
guilty pleasure. I always liked this one cause he says that even
bees are oppressed.

4. Island in the Sun - Weezer
It's such a feel good song that puts me in a good mood, although they
are cheesy and nerdy. Plus the video has baby animals in it - that
makes me giggle.

5. Head Over Heels - The Go-Go's

6. One Thing (feat. Eve) - Amerie
Another good dance song - I have a thing for Top 40 hip-hop sometimes

7. Nothing in this World - Paris Hilton
My fascination with Paris Hilton isn't so much that I like her music,
but that she is so popular for doing nothing. She has seriously done
"nothing in this world" except market herself.

8. Africa - Toto
A nice old song to reinforce the Other

9. Total Eclipse of the Heart - Bonnie Tyler
I have no idea what this song means, except that love is violent and
disruptive. I hear you, Bonnie. I hear you.

10. Don't Stop Believin' - Journey
A song about perseverance is important for any revolutionary. Thank
you Journey.

11. Blasphemous Rumours - Depeche Mode
Yes, I sometimes still listen to Depeche Mode. That quasi goth, semi
electronic crap. But still so good.

12. My Love Life - Morrissey
People consistently give me a hard time about Morrissey, claiming he
just plain sucks after the Smiths. He is whiney and cliche. When
will he stop?? Hopefully never!

13. When You Were Mine - Cindy Lauper
I was a fan of CIndy Lauper since I was 7 and it has never stopped,
even when Debbie Harry called her a "punk poser."

14. Silent Lucidity - Queensryche.
I was going to put the Unforgiven by Metallica, but Queensryche is
way more of a guilty pleasure than Metallica. Power ballads. Amen!

15. New Year's Eve - U2
I hate U2 after Joshua Tree, and with Bono being all "Make Poverty
History" while being the third largest property owner in Ireland
makes me livid. But, the old stuff is always good.

I actually made a mix similar to this 2 years ago, but there was lots of debate over whether some of the claps were snare drums, or synthesized. So I have cleaned it up a little. Pavement is a pretty good metaphor for 1994. Not the building material, but the band. Now, in 2006, every hipster from here to Stockholm says that they love Slanted and Enchanted and that Pavement defined the 1990s. But in 1994, Pavement was a one-hit wonder. I remember hearing Cut Your Hair on the radio, and thought about buying Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. But I didn’t. And then a decade later, I bought it for hipster points. But in conversation, I would never tell that to a soul. “Slanted and Enchanted defined my mid-teens” is a lie if you ever hear it. I can almost promise you that. Purple on the other hand, might have. Interstate Love Song is maybe the fourth best song of the decade. The point is that, hipsters drop bands like Cap’n Jazz, Sebadoh, The Fall, Silver Jews, etc, for ’94, but that’s only retrospectively. Ace of Base ruled all in 1994.

1994 has to be one of the most confusing years on record. My personal record.

I remember I had just moved to a new city and was pretty open to some personal makeover-ing, however, I was also had some sort of mid-nineties hyper-colored techno-bathed roller-rink-induced hangover...hence the pretty confused mix.
The other 2/3 of the mix is prettily heavily MIX1060-influenced (Calgary reference).But I make no apologies...anyone who knows me knows I dance harder to Technotronic than to nearly anything else.

1994 will always be one of those years that I always will remember. It was the last year of junior high, the year I got my learners license, the year that I had that I first really got drunk. The year I hung out past my curfew and chilled with random girls that didn’t go to school with me and liked to wreck stuff in the park. It was year OJ took off on the freeway and the year that Tonya Harding proved that sometimes you shouldn’t do all it takes to win. 1994 was the year that I listened to Mix 1060 solely based on the fact that I thought Sky Taylor’s voice was hot. Most importantly it was the year that I really got into music. I had always really liked music and had been collecting tapes since I was like 3 or 4. (My first being Shout at the Devil by Motley Crue…yes my mom was wicked because she bought it for me), but 1994 was really the year I got into it, exploring all sorts of genres. It was the year I discovered there were other punk bands besides the Clash or the Ramones, the year that I thought wow I could be a gangsta, life in the burbs is pretty tough (Maybe I should forget that phase). It was a time that I discovered nerds could be cool (see Weezer) and a time where I thought Seattle was a holy land of interesting music. (Like all cool things soon after 94 it became flooded with junk and rip off bands that have me despising some of the bands I once called my favourite…I’m looking at you Soundgarden…at least we will always have BADMOTORFINGER)Anyway, this mix brought back some kick ass memories and there are stories to most of these songs that would take to long to post here but if you really must know, one day I might be bored enough to tell them.

Otherwise, historians and bloggers would be out of jobs. Again, scientifically speaking (ask any scientician), the 80s was certainly not the BEST decade, nor was it the worst. The Cosby Show was alright and Bono was cool until the middle of the 90s. I’m a sucker for euro trash techno…this qualifies as that…I’m pretty sure Basshunter is Swedish. Also the video kicks ass.. check it here

I think this is the best track off the new HA album…although I sped it up for this mix, I figured it gave it a little more of a dance feel

18.) Belle and Sebastian – We are the Sleepyheads
I really love this song and I figure that it might get your feet tapping like mine are now just thinking about listening to it

M83- Car Crash Terror -- This might be one of the creepiest songs ever…seriously listen to this while driving on a dark highway and I think the movie version would even be scarier. Maybe that chick from Gilmore girls could be in it…she talks pretty fast.

Copeland – Part Time Lover -- I’m thinking this could be a great murder mystery, one filled with sex, betrayal and revenge. Somehow I don’t think Stevie Wonder’s version has these same sorts of darkundertones. I’m picturing a creepier version of Wicker Park.

The Clash – Magnificent 7 -- Who are the Magnificent 7 and what are they all about? That’s what I’m talking about dude. I wish the Rat Pack was still around to do this. Maybe, the brat pack could make a comeback?

Billy Joel – My Life -- I think the lyrics to this song say enough. You can write a whole movie about it. Plus it was the theme song for Bosom Buddies. I think Tom Hanks would have to star in it based solely on that, he owes Billy one.

The Boy Least Likely To – Hugging My Grudge -- This movie could be about any grudge…but not like that movie that grudge pick. In all honesty I picture a small town in the American mid west and a young man struggling with life there.

Coheed and Cambria – The Suffering -- Every Coheed song could be a movie and damn crazy one at that. I would want Tim Burton to be involved. Claymation Coheed movies could be the next big thing.

Angry Agency – Soldier -- Total love story. You know how there are those couples that no matter what you know that they love each other, that’s what this movie would be about. I would want really cute actors to play in it. Not sexy but cute!

Murder City Devils – 364 Days -- Santa should be a jolly old man right? What if Santa wasn’t happy being Santa…what if he was Santa not by choice? In this movie Saint Nick would be a depressed old manforced to be Santa by God for the rest of his life as punishment for the sins he committed. I picture an old depressed drunk…angry at the world….angry at God….angry at society….but in the end he meets a young woman who changes his life and herealizes that what he is doing makes children happy and he finds redemption.

Nada Surf – The Blizzard of 77 -- The year is 1977…crazy blizzard…Vermont…a car full of teens….a crash…a look into their souls, their stories as they realize they are going to die. The regrets theyhave, the secrets they share.

Alkaline Trio – Sadie -- I for some reason have this picture of a woman in love with a corpse. The majorityof the movie would take part in a grave yard where she imagines her life with this corpse and in the end you realize she murdered him. Most of the movie would involve just two actors and any other characters would be blurry in the background any time they were on screen. Like if they were on a date….you would only be able to focus onthe two of them the background people would all be a blur.

Frou Frou – Must be Dreaming -- A “chick flick” about a girl who lives her life in her dreams. The movie would be aseries of quick short fantasies that the audience sees through her eyes. Like a romance with a mysterious pirate or a tale about a visit to the country where she encounters knights and dragons. Maybe even a dream about growing up in the great depression and visiting the circus. In the end you realize that is just a small child dreaming and you see the importance of dreams as a child.

Bomb the Music Industry – Syke Life is Awesome -- This would be a comedy. Why…because I love romantic comedies. It would be about a guy who everyone thinks is a loser. He still lives with his parents in the basement, he plays D and D, has no friends and the only girls he knows are ones he meets on the internet. He hates life and often thinks about killing himself but one day he meets a girl who lives an equally nerdy life. They realize that being a nerd is cool. They share a love for comics and geeky things like making mix cds and writing music. In the end they get married, proving that you know what Life is Awesome and sharing it with someone is really rad.

Concerning the UFO Sighting.. – Sufjan Stevens – Pretty self explanatory. Kind of like Close Encounters, but with the word revenant.

For Today I Am A Boy – Antony and the Johnsons- The prequel to Transamerica. Playing the Felicity Huffman character, the girl from Felicity.

Holland, 1945 – Neutral Milk Hotel – I’m sure this one is about Anne Frank. Have they ever made a movie about her? Probably. I’ve never seen it. The fuzz in this song means that it has to be in black and white. I assume that’s what that means.

Alive With The Glory of Love – Say Anything – Another Nazi movie. Have I told you how I hate Nazi movies? But in this one you don’t really find out it’s about Nazis until the end. Have you seen Life is Beautiful? Great. I haven’t. “I won’t let them take you…” PS- the song is really about the Nazis, I think.

Mr. Roboto – Styx – Not about Nazis. “You’re wondering who I am?” That is the sound of box office success. Machine or mannequin? Some wicked IBM product-placement too. Let’s do this thing. May or may not star Will Smith.

Memory Machine – The Dismemberment Plan – Really, can you ever have enough movies exploring the debate between artificial and real happiness? This is really the only reason science fiction exists. Ethics, people, ethics.

Bee-Sting Necklace – The Bonaduces – If kids weren’t such terrible actors, this would make a great My Girl 3. He doesn’t know what to do about her allergy, so he makes her a necklace so if she gets stung she won’t have to go far to get her medication. Cute? Cute.

Have You Forgotten – Red House Painters – Another kids movie, but more like a John Irving retrospective thing. Casey Casem will make an appearance if we want it.

Miss May – Beija Flor – This is kind of like Hansel and Gretel meets the Pied Piper. Sweet old May convinces all these kids to come with her. Or maybe she steals them. We could turn this into a psychological thriller of sorts.

Daniel – Elton John – I went through my Vietnam phase when I was 12 (Paint It, Black and Copperhead Road), but this song might actually be about the Spanish Civil War, I’m not sure. Maybe Elton and Bernie are making a statement about war in general. Maybe this isn’t about war after all.

After the Gold Rush – Neil Young – I don’t actually really know what this song is about. The Disney Robin Hood, maybe? “The archer split the tree.” But the Mother Nature part doesn’t make a lot of sense. Maybe we could get Terry Gilliam to direct this one.

Karma Police - Radiohead – Of all the songs here, this one probably has the best chance. Come on everyone, let’s push it. Thom might not be so into it, but that’s just bad Karma. Get it?

Common People – William Shatner – The Pulp cover of this song is pretty good too, but this one has star power. We’d have to get a younger William Shatner, though. Colin Firth, maybe? The other Colin? We’ll work on it.

Everything Evil – Coheed and Cambria – Since it’s already a comic book, this one has a pretty good chance too. An intergalactic virus, a love story, and a planet doomed to extinction. This one pretty much writes itself.

November Rain – Guns ‘N Roses – I guess they kind of already made a movie about this one. But that woman in the video (his girlfriend at the time) broke up with Axl, so maybe we should give him another chance with that dude with a KFC bucket on his head (Buckethead). We’ll have to get someone to scout out that church, though. It’s in California, somewhere, I’m sure of it.

No one ever stays up all night in winter. It gets dark so easily. But at some point (usually after Daylight Savings Time), one might decide that the best things to do involve driving aimlessly out of town late at night, only to return early the next morning. This is a soundtrack for that ride back into town. It's almost hot in the car because the sun is coming up, but spring nights are always colder than you think. You're tired, but not tired enough to drive off the road into that big oak tree. (And yes I realize that this picture looks like the one for the last season of Six Feet Under -- no connection, I swear.) Enjoy, Dave. Find this mix here.

For me spring was always a time when I came out of hibernation. During high school and for some years afterwards spring signaled a time where we would drive around and do stupid shit. Stuff like drinking gross booze as fast as we could in parking lots,then heading out to break stuff, light fireworks, throw water balloons, or play carwars. This mix is symbolic of those times, where all I thought about was causing a ruckus, going to local shows and maybe meeting some random girl. The mix starts out fast and slowly moves to a mellow sound, symbolizing the beginning of the night, the party in between and then the eventual quiet ride home. Enjoy Mike... Click here to download.

We're really excited about this project and we hope you are too! Our next mixes will be up on Monday, with the theme being "Spring". Pretty vague, so hopefully we'll have a couple really different posts for your perusal. In other news, we're growing, and we want you to help us out!
